No More Tequila

I made the mistake of drinking tequila for my birthday, even though I’d totally sworn off tequila in the past. I soon remembered why I had sworn off tequila; I love the taste of it mixed with pretty much anything and I always wind up drinking too much of it whenever tequila comes into the equation, which does not wind up working out as a particularly pretty picture for me.

On my birthday, I of course wound up having people buy drinks for me, which was why I ended up having tequila in the first place. Not surprisingly, I eventually got very sick and I don’t remember very much from the night, though I’m told I made a number of bad decisions and the hangover I had afterwards was perhaps the most horrendous hangover I’ve ever had. I’d rather drink a bottle of Mercury oil than ever have tequila again.

An Irrational Fear of Cruise Ships

I have an irrational fear of cruise ships that stems from the knowledge I have about the Titanic. I’ve obviously seen the movie Titanic, as well as a number of documentaries about the ship, and for some reason, they’ve instilled this really bizarre deep-seated fear of cruise ships. I was invited out to go on a cruise with some family members not too long ago and I had to vehemently refuse because even the thought of being on a cruise ship made me woozy.

Oddly enough, it’s only cruise ships that freak me out. Other types of watercraft don’t terrify me at all. I’m actually a huge fan of boating. Just the other day, I went out and picked up some Mercury Premium Plus oil for my own boat. However, you’ll never see me on a giant cruise ship-sized watercraft; I think part of what really terrifies me is the sheer size of the boat itself. I wouldn’t be able to deal with it.

Brand Loyalty

Ever since I bought a boat, I decided I would learn how to do all of my own boat maintenance. I’ve always done my own maintenance on any car I’ve ever owned, so I figured it’d be worthwhile learning about how to keep my boat maintained as well, considering that’s the type of thing I’m interested in.

Some people, myself included, develop a kind of brand loyalty towards certain types of items used for boat maintenance. On my boat, for instance, I only use Mercury 2 stroke premium outboard motor oil. I did a lot of research to figure out what would be best for the type of boat that I have and that’s what I landed on.

A Mechanic’s Opinion

I’m a mechanic; I work a lot with cars, but my specialty is actually with working on boats, which allows me to have a niche market of working on my customers’ cars and boats, letting them bring both vehicles to the same place with the mechanics they already know and trust.

Sometimes people have asked me which brands of oil they should be purchasing for their boats. Personally, I’ve always stuck with Mercury oil for the engines of boats that I work on, but I know other people that use different brands of oil and have had similar success rates. I intend to keep using Mercury oil when I’m at work, however

Different Interests

My girlfriend is different from most girls. She grew up as the youngest child with five older brothers and her interests have been heavily influenced by her dad and her brothers. She’s really interested in cars and boats, for instance. She even has her own boat, which is rare for a girl in her twenties who still lives in an apartment.

Even gift-giving with her is a little strange, certainly different than what it’s been like for my previous girlfriends. I asked her what she wanted for her birthday and all she could think of was a bottle of Mercury 2 cycle oil. She uses it for her boat. It’s a very different experience just because she’s interested in such different things than anyone else I’ve dated before.

Biggest Fish Contest

I was fishing with a close buddy of mine and we decided to make a gentleman’s wager in regards to who could catch the biggest fish. Neither of us had ever really caught a whopper before, but we figured it was something that could allow us to test, perhaps, which of us was the better fisherman. Or at the very least, it’d just be a fun, interesting way to spice up our fishing trip.

We were fishing for hours and honestly, we weren’t getting very many bites until the very end of the night, surprisingly enough. We each caught a single fish by the end of it all. He won the bet and I had to give him a bottle of Mercury engine oil for his boat.

The Search for Nessie

My father’s a fairly superstitious man and on top of that, he’s Scottish. He was always the type to tell tall tales about strange things he’d seen back when he lived in Glasgow. I swear I’d heard him tell the same stories about UFOs landing in his backyard to anyone who was willing to listen to him babble for ten minutes.

Being a Scotsman, his favorite tall tale, of course, was the Loch Ness Monster, or as he liked to call her, ‘Nessie.’ He always had stories to share about ‘the time he saw Nessie.’ He’s always said that when he’s got the money, he’ll take the whole family out to Scotland so that he can show her to us. It might be a long ride, so hopefully he’ll fuel his boat with Mercury oil.

Fishing in Colorado

My son lives in Colorado and knowing my love for fishing, he decided to fly me out for my birthday to take me to the Carter Lake Reservoir on his boat. It was a grand old time and I was shocked to see how huge the reservoir was. The Carter Lake Reservoir covers 1,100 acres with water, and we certainly weren’t the only fishermen out by the dam, but with that much space, we were able to keep to ourselves and have a great weekend of father-son bonding.

Out in the Carter Lake Reservoir, there are walleye, salmon, largemouth bass, rainbow trout, and more types of fish than I could have possibly imagined. I know that there were areas nearby – in the massive amount of surrounding land – where people were hunting and hiking and having all sorts of good times. In my case, however, fishing was all I needed and I made sure to supply my son’s boat with Mercury 2 Stroke Oil in order to thank him for taking me on such a great trip.

Boating in Wisconsin

The next best boat to resident ratio is found in Wisconsin. For every Cheesehead there are nine boats. Every county has at least four lakes, with Vilas county having an impressive 1,327 (yes, you read that number correctly).

Even during the cold winters there are boat-able locations. One popular destination is the 600-acre Lake Columbia just north of Madison. Warm water from a power plant flows into the lake so it doesn’t freeze over. You don’t have to winterize your boat if you go there; just top off your outboard motor oil and you’re good to go for year round fishing.

Government Cut

Government Cut – what an odd name for a fishing spot. I’ve read that during the winter fishing season Government Cut is tarpon central. Since I’ll be visiting in July I’m wondering if I want to expend my Mercury OptiMax oil there or move on to another hole.

What’s keeping me from making a decision one way or the other is that the Cut is in a great location. The north side of the north jetty extends to 18th Street on Miami Beach, while the south side extends to Fisher Island. The deep channel attracts mangrove snapper, grouper, barracuda, and cobia. Not sure if I’d want to catch a barracuda, but mangrove snapper sounds delectable.

Fishing in Florida

I cannot wait for next weekend to roll around. I’m packing up the car and heading to Florida with the family for a July 4th vacation. While my wife and daughter enjoy lounging on the beach, my son and I plan to hit up as many fishing holes as possible.

In preparing for the trip, I have looked at all sorts of top ten lists to find the best fishing holes in Florida. Yellowtail, mutton snapper, grouper, and king mackerel – the list of fish just waiting to be caught is quite tantalizing. Now all I need to do is make sure I have plenty of Mercury engine oil!

Extended Vacation

You’re probably wondering why I’ve been so silent on my blog lately. Well, the reason why you haven’t gotten your daily dose of my boating advice is that I’ve been enjoying an extended vacation. My wife and I are getting up there in age and our kids are mostly out of the house, so we used this vacation as a test run for retirement.

Of course, I also used this time to test out a lot of cool boats. I learned a thing or two from the people I met along the way. For instance, I’m now hooked on Mercury premium plus oil. A friend of mine swears by the stuff, and when I took his boat out, it handled like a dream!
