What You’ll Need for a Tune Up Aside from Outboard Oil

boat-motor-oil-300x225Properly maintaining your outboard engine means having regular maintenance that will extend the life of the engine. At *least* once a year, owners should tune up their outboard motor. You should follow the owners manual your specific model came with before trying to tune yours. However, there are some materials every model will need.

You will need outboard oil, soft cloths, lower-unit lubricant, fresh fuel, replacement spark plugs, and waterproof marine grease. All of these materials can be bought online or at a marine store. Some of the tools that will make your tune up easier will be the owner’s manual, a screwdriver, adjustable wrench, and pliers.

The Right Mix for Two Cycle Oil

Four_stroke_cycle_compressionGetting the right gas to oil mixture ratio for a two stroke engine can make or break your engine — literally. Luckily, manufacturers have already come up with the right amount of each to best maintain and run an engine. Whether you have a golf cart, garden tool or motor skates, it’s important to find out which ratio will work the best for you.

For most tools, transportation and recreational motors, the ratio will be in the range of 20:1 to 100:1 gas to two cycle oil. For most motorcycles, you will need 32:1 but others require 40:1 and others use 50:1. This makes it incredibly important to check your model rather than making an assumption. Make sure to not add oil to the fuel for a 4 cycle engine.

Learning How to Drive a Boat with Yamaha 2M Oil

1234154012_largeGrowing up, I used to spend a week or two at my extended family’s lake house in Ontario. It was always a long drive, taking about nine hours to get there from our house in New Jersey. While there was a lot to look forward to for the trip, I always anticipated getting to take boat-rides on the lake and get to explore the many islands and coves.

One year, my mom’s boyfriend decided I was old enough to learn how to drive the boat. He showed me how to put the Yamaha 2M oil in, and then we took off into the lake. I was 12 years old and had only ever driven in Mario Kart, but I quickly got used to turning the motor in the opposite direction of where I wanted to go. It went smoothly until I ‘parked’ at the dock.

Best Mercury Engine Oil Mix

mercury_250verado-sternrunEngines are complicated things. For mechanics, it’s like second nature to figure out what oil is right for your engine, and doesn’t take much to figure out why one is more beneficial than the next. For those who are not so trained in the art of maintaining mechanics, it can be overwhelming to even decipher which oil is made for which vehicle.

If you have a mercury engine, knowing the right fuel to oil ratio is one of the most important pieces of information. You should have 50 parts of mercury engine oil to 1 part of gas. This will lengthen the life of your motor and ensure it runs more smoothly. Make sure to also have regular tune-ups twice a year when your boat is being used regularly.

Same Quality with Bulk Outboard Motor Oil

B51F5DgCGkKGrHqFjEEyd8QJlnSBMvI7QT1gw_35Buying the right oil for any vehicle can be the difference between a long lasting investment and a never-ending nightmare. Due to this, many people stray away from buying in bulk. There seems to be a myth that bulk oil is of lower quality than that of bottled oil. However, this is only a myth.

Since the price is less expensive, many consumers leave feeling bulk outboard motor oil is much lower quality oil. This isn’t true at all. Buying oil in bulk provides you the same quality as the bottle versions. The only difference is the price. Just like buying a 36-pack of soda is less cost per can, the same is true when buying oil. Due to buying more at once, the price per unit goes down.

Get the Most out of Your Two Cycle Outboard

PU9D0379-01_copy2-1024x682If you have recently purchased a 2 cycle outboard, there are a few things you need to do in order to get the most out of your investment. With a few tips and tricks, you can get the most out of the engine by ensuring it lasts through the years at top performance. The first few hours of use will dictate how well the engine performs for many years.

While breaking in the new engine, it is recommended to limit and vary the rpms. The top two things you need to watch out for with a two-stroke outboard are ethanol and water. Ethanol is know to cause fuel system issues that can ruin your outing.  Ethanol is also responsible for causing water in your fuel.  It is important to treat your fuel every tank with a fuel treatment such as Yamalube RingFree Plus.

Where is the Oil Filter on my 2-stroke Engine?

mercury-4-strokes-175-verado-close-upIt’s not a news-breaking headline that you need a good filter to get the best performance from an engine. Having a new filter can promote the longevity and performance peak of your engine. But why do 2-stroke motors not have an oil filter?  I did some research and found out there is good reason.  In a 4-stroke engine (like the one in your car), the oil is added to a reservoir and is then recirculated through the engine, lubricating the moving parts and settling back into the oil pan.  It collects the “bad stuff” as it circulates, and therefore, it must be filtered before returning to the engine again.

So what makes a 2-stroke engine different?  In a 2-stroke engine, the oil is consumed with the combustion process.  Since it is not recirculated, no oil filter is necessary!

What’s the Difference between Yamalube 2-M and 2-W?

2mwWhen looking at the best oil for your water sports vehicle, all of the different numbers and letters on the bottles can get confusing. It may seem like there is no real difference between your oil options and that all motors operate the same. You always want to pay attention to the types and ratings of the oil your engine calls for.

The difference between Yamalube 2-M and 2-W is a great example of one being slightly better for a specific vehicle. Yamalube 2-W was designed by Yamaha for their WaveRunner and inboard jet-powered boat engines and is not a TC-W3 rated oil.  2-M is TC-W3 rated and is specifically designed for use as 2-stroke outboard oil. Both oils were blended with precision and are often used as the industry standard in great oil.

Boat Motor Oil for Cathartic Fishing Trips

k-beach-phillips-in-river-boat-1956-webThere’s nothing I love more than going fishing with my friends. I find it to be an extremely cathartic experience that helps me to unwind. It’s also a good way to catch up with your buddies if you don’t get a chance to see them that often throughout the week. Since most of my friends and I have very busy schedules, we tend to have a lot to talk about when we fish on the weekends.

Usually, I’ll just fill up my boat with boat motor oil and check out whether or not any other maintenance needs to be done for my boat on Wednesday or Thursday night, so that I can know for sure that my boat will be ready to go by the weekend. Usually, my friends and I will get up early on either a Saturday or a Sunday and we head out to a nearby lake for fishing.

Sticking with Evinrude Outboard Oil

xd30_group-low-rezI’m definitely the type of person who is very set in his ways. When I start doing something, I stick to it, no matter what that might entail. I’m not a quitter and I’m not one who is very willing to change from routine, unless it is absolutely necessary. I enjoy living in a state of comfort, where things in my life don’t ever get too far outside of my control.

One way that I show this trait is through brand loyalty. For instance, I am absolutely adamant that only Evinrude outboard oil is used on my boat. I’ve gotten great performance out of Evinrude products and I don’t have any intention of changing things up for any reason, because I’m a firm believer that you should stick with what works.

Bulk Motor Oil for Someone Who Doesn’t Like Shopping

55 gallon drumI’m not really a big spender and I loathe shopping. I spend money on the things that I want and those things are few and far between. Apart from cost of living, food, bar tabs, and vehicle maintenance, there’s not a whole lot that I need. I’m not the type who buys a bunch of clothes all the time or who constantly needs the newest technological gadgets that are on the market.

This has allowed me to use my money better. For instance, whenever I get a bonus at work, I usually load up on essential things that I need. I’ll buy items for my car or boat, for example. Whenever I’m purchasing supplies for my boat, I make sure to stock up on bulk motor oil. This way, I don’t constantly have to go shopping to get new items.
