Oil Storage Drums

If you’re like me, then you try to save money by ordering your outboard motor oil in bulk. While this is a great money saver, you need to be careful with how you store oil. Drums can be made of several materials, including polyethylene and steel. You need to check with the manufacturer to make sure that the container you use for storage is appropriate for the oil it contains.

An incorrect storage drum can cause damage to the oil itself. The wrong storage drum can also become corroded and leak oil everywhere, thus hurting the environment and your wallet. The moral of this story is, give your mercury oil 55 gallon drum guy a call when you place your order to make sure everything is kosher.

Winterizing Small Boat Motor

I realize that it is only October, but the cool fall air and incessant holiday shopping commercials have already put winter on my mind. With colder temperatures brings the end of boating season. I know I’ll be spending the upcoming weekend winterizing my small outboard boat motor.

It doesn’t take too much to winterize a small boat motor – cleaning out the engine, adding fuel stabilizer and whatnot. It is such a simple task that it always amazes me when people fail to do it, knowing full well that an improperly cared for motor left to sit over the winter can lead to all sorts of problems. Hopefully this post has served as a reminder and all of you readers will go and winterize your boats in the coming weeks. While you’re at it, don’t forget to order bulk outboard motor oil for next season.

The Importance of Labeling

Purchasing in bulk is a good way to save money. Without proper labeling, however, accidents can occur. This is especially true when chemicals or oil is ordered in bulk.

That is why all of my bulk oil is labeled clearly. In large letters I write out what the substance is and the date it was stored. I’ve also put up caution signs on and inside of the shed where I store the bulk oil containers. This is to ensure that anyone in the area knows to stay away with flames.

Cleaning Up Oil Spills

Oil spills are par for the course when working on the engine of a boat, car, or truck. It is possible to get rid of these spills, even when the spill is on a concrete floor. Start by laying down a layer of kitty litter or sawdust over the spill. The kitty litter or sawdust will soak up any excess oil still on the floor.

Once the liquid has been soaked up, sweep the kitty litter or sawdust into a dustpan and dispose of properly. With soap dish and a nylon bristle brush, rub the stained area to loosen up the oil. Finally set a pressure washer on a narrow, focused stream of water to break up the oil even further. These few steps should get the oil stains out of a concrete floor, even if you have a large spill involving bulk motor oil.

Making Smart Business Purchases

A few years ago one of my friends opened up a boat rental business. He lives in a beach community in New Jersey that has a small year round population and a massive summertime crowd. His business is successful, but since most of his business is driven by summer tourists he has to be careful how he spends his money.

One of the ways he saves money is by buying in bulk. For instance, at the start of the summer season, he buys at least one Mercury oil 55 gallon drum. He saves a bundle by buying in bulk and he never has to worry about running out of oil to service his boats.

What to Do with Used Oil

Over 180 million gallons of motor oil are disposed of illegally each year. This number should be zero, but many people do not know the rules of what to do with used oil. Simply put, motor oil should always be recycled and never go into land fills or down the storm drain.

As previously stated, motor oil is 100 percent recyclable. When you go to replace your oil with some from your store of bulk outboard motor oil, make sure to save the old oil. You can either drop it off at an oil change center or auto parts store; they’ll add it to their own collection of used oil and drop it off at the proper recycling center. You can also call your local waste hauler and find out if they offer curbside collection – then you don’t even have to leave your own driveway!

Storing Bulk Oil

We previously posted about the savings associated with purchasing motor oil in bulk, but what do you do once you have a 50 gallon barrel of oil? Obviously, you’re not going to use the motor oil all at once, so you need to properly store it. A shed or sheltered facility that is cool and free from moisture is an ideal storage spot.

Oil drums can leak, so you may want to store your bulk oil in an oil tank. These tanks tend to be more durable. Still, leaks can occur so check your oil tanks regularly for leaks. Clean up all spills immediately and replace or patch up leaking containers.

Maintaining a Fleet

Do you own a fleet of small fishing boats? Or perhaps a fleet of boats for day cruises? Then you need to be smart with your money to keep your business afloat in these difficult financial times.

One of the ways you can save money is by purchasing bulk motor oil. Buying in bulk is far cheaper than purchasing oil as you go along. Also, you don’t have to sacrifice quality for a lower cost; you can still by your preferred brand of motor oil.

Cod with Escarole and Lemon

Simply thinking about cod makes my mouth begin to water. This tried and true recipe is sure to delight even the pickiest of eaters. All you need are 2 lemons, 1 tablespoon olive oil, 1 medium red onion thinly sliced, 2 thinly sliced garlic cloves, 2 pounds of coarsely chopped escarole, salt and pepper, and, of course, 4 boneless skinless cod fillets. Begin by slicing one lemon into 8 thin slices, and squeeze out the juice from the leftover lemon into a bowl and set aside. Next, add the olive oil into a heavy-duty pot and heat over medium-high. Add the onions and garlic and brown both (approximately 6 minutes).

Add in the escarole and ½ cup water to the pot. Place cod on top of the liquid and season with salt and pepper, then add two lemon slices to each fillet. Cover and cook the cod for 12 to 14 minutes. Remove the fish and serve with escarole covered in the leftover lemon juice. The cod should flake perfectly and look quite beautiful with the lemon slices as garnish. You’ll be glad you stocked up on the bulk outboard motor oil that allowed your cod fishing trip in the first place.

Environmentally Friendly Boating Tip 6

One thing that can’t be stressed enough is recycling. Recycle, recycle, recycle. This is one of the biggest, easiest ways everyone can contribute to environmental conservation. What does recycling mean to boaters? Well, in addition to keeping your trash out of waterways and off of coastlines, it means the proper disposal of batteries, paints and other chemicals. 12V batteries are one of the most recycled products on the planet. Any hazardous wastes must be disposed of properly and in accordance with local laws and regulations.

Many marinas and shops will offer a credit for an old battery when purchasing a new one. This is a nice incentive to anyone replacing a battery and also helps keep batteries out of landfills. In addition, never pump sewage out when you are near the shore. Check local regulations for specifics, but most marinas offer pump-out stations for proper waste disposal. And don’t forget to buy bulk oil for maximum savings this season.
