Operation Kid Float

Memorial Day is a deadly holiday for drivers and boaters, particularly in Florida where people flock to the beaches to soak up the sun. The Pinellas County Sheriff’s Office Marine Unit patrolled the waters, pulling over boaters to make sure all safety gear was in order. To help keep kids safe, the Sheriff’s Office instituted “Operation Kid Float.”

Children without life jackets were given life jackets to borrow for the day, to be returned to a bucket drop off on shore. Additionally, kids who were found to be wearing their life jackets properly were rewarded with t-shirts. The t-shirts read “I got caught wearing my life jacket by a Pinellas County Deputy Sherriff.” What a positive approach to boat safety! To do your part, inspect your boat thoroughly to make sure you’re in compliance with all safety regulations, and be sure to stock up on Evinrude XD50 oil.

Keeping the Water Safe

Memorial Day weekend has come and gone. Now we are fully into the summer season. Not surprisingly, boating accidents jump during the summer months. Officers were out in full force on the water this past weekend to keep boaters safe.

For instance, in Pinellas County, Florida, 45 boating accidents were reported last year. That’s down from 51 in 2008, but it still ranks pretty high statewide. To combat this statistic, officers inspected boats and passed out life jackets for people to borrow. Kids who wore their life vests were rewarded for following the rules. Part of water safety is making sure your boat is in good condition, so make sure to use Evinrude XD100 oil before heading out on the water.

Wear and Tear of Trolling

For catching big-game fish like tuna and marlin, there’s nothing quite like trolling. Inshore species like bluefish, kingfish, and jacks, are also caught by trolling. Freshwater anglers use trolling to pick up muskie, walleye, black bass, and striped bass.

, though effective, can be taxing on your motorboat. To keep your boat running smoothly, you’ll want to use Yamalube 2M oil. The Yamalube brand has been proven to withstand the wear and tear of trolling and other activities that put a strain on a boat’s engine.

Memorial Day Weekend Checklist

Memorial Day, though a somber holiday in some respects, is also the unofficial start to the summer season. The three-day weekend at the end of May allows families to flock to pools, beaches, lakes, and rivers for some fun in the sun. Memorial Day weekend is chock full of barbecues and summer kick-off parties.

On the water, boaters are eager to show off their motorboats and jet skis. Everyone just seems to be in a good mood, waving to other boats as they cruise by. To ensure a good time is had by all, make sure to go through your inspection checklist, including refilling with Evinrude XD50 oil. Make sure you have plenty of life vests and that your first aid kits have been restocked. Lots of food, drinks, sunscreen, and friends are also a must for a successful party.

Spotlight On: Boston Whaler

In 1956 Richard T. Fisher and C. Raymond Hunt produced the original 13 foot Boston Whaler. Based on the Hickman sea sled hull, the duo modified the hull and used polyurethane foam to fill the fiberglass skin. Other manufacturers have since picked up on the practice because it provides strength, buoyancy, and sound deadening.

Typically, Boston Whaler boats are used recreationally for sport fishing, water sports, and as tender on large yachts. In recent years, Boston Whalers have been purchased by the U.S. Coast Guard and the U.S. Navy. Today, Boston Whaler, Inc. is part of the Brunswick Boat Group, a division of Brunswick Corporation. To keep the Mercury Marine outboard motor that comes with each Boston Whaler humming, be sure to use Yamalube 2W oil.

Spotlight On: Brunswick Boat Group

With 1.7 billion USD in net sales in 2008 alone, the Brunswick Boat Group is the king of recreation boats. The Brunswick Boat Group, located in Knoxville, Tennessee, makes pleasure boats and offshore fishing boats on a variety of labels. Among the 45 brands are Cabo Yachts, Flipper, Sealine, and Quicksilver.

The BBG was formed in 2000 to manage the holdings of the Brunswick Corporations labels. The group is privately held. In five years, from 2000 to 2005, BBG doubled in size and acquired 13 new brands. The sluggish economy has had an affect on the company; they had to reduce their workforce by 10 percent after seeing sales fall 16 percent in 2008. The brands associated with BBG have impeccable reputations. Whether you own a Sealine or a Flipper, be sure to use Yamalube 2M oil.

Boat Engine Basics ~ Cooling

Last, but certainly not least, the cooling system of a boat engine is necessary for proper operation. However, where most other parts or functions of a boat engine are similar to that of an automobile engine, the cooling system is actually quite different. For a boat engine, raw water is pumped directly from the ocean, river or lake in which the boat is currently resting.

This water is then channeled through the engine block’s water jacket and is then circulated by the water pump where the water then flows into the risers. These specialty devices mix the boat exhaust with the water and the exhaust then forces the hot water back into the lake. And there you have it, in five days we have covered the basic parts of any boat engine so that, hopefully, you know a little more about its inner workings.

Keep your boat engine happy, clean and powerful with Evinrude XD 50 oil.

Boat Engine Basics ~ Compression

Compression within the boat engine is yet another essential part of maintaining a steady operating vessel. The compression is more of an action that a specific part of the engine. Here are the basic steps that need to occur to ensure the proper compression within the boat engine takes place:

• The cylinder must not leak any power when the spark ignites the fuel
• The rings around the piston must press against the cylinder wall exactly
• The valve seats must fit exactly in their guides

The timing must be exact in all areas and the parts may not be worn down or damaged, otherwise the engine will not run at full power. However, you can help things along with the clean power of Yamalube 2W oil.
