Synthetic Blend Outboard Oil

According to Mercury Marine, their synthetic blend Verado outboard motor oil is far superior to a popular 15W 50 full synthetic oil. Verado, they claim, has better shear stability and volatility. It also has a higher viscosity and HTHS after shear.

Improved bearing protection is a result of the superior HTHS after shear. In difficult situations, the Mercury synthetic outboard motor oil blend holds its viscosity better. Mercury Marine’s synthetic Verado blend consumes less oil than the popular brand. I’m inclined to believe the claims made about Verado given Mercury Marine’s reputation and staying power in the industry.

V750 Cruiser

Even though I’m supposed to be looking for an inflatable tender, I couldn’t help but check out some of the top of the line inflatable crafts made by Mercury Marine. The V750 Cruiser, for example, is a real beauty. The inflatable boat can be used for fishing, diving, or as a snorkeling platform.

The Cruiser comes with bow stern and anchor lockers, integral fuel tank, electric bilge pump, and a diving platform with ladder and deck shower kit. Rear bench seating, 12-volt ice chest, and switch panel with 12-volt accessory plug makes it quite the luxury boat. Best of all, the Cruiser is compatible with several engines which all take Mercury 2 cycle oil.

Winter in Florida

As I’ve mentioned several times before, I have family in Miami and Naples, Florida. After the windy weather passed in Seattle, where I spent the holiday, I gave my family members a call to wish them a Merry Christmas. When I told them about the wind and power outages in the Northwest, they laughed and said, “You should have come to Florida!”

My uncle told me that it was in the upper 70s. He and my aunt were still wearing shorts and flip-flops! My uncle was even contemplating going to the store to pick up some Evinrude E-Tec to take out his watercrafts for a spin. Like I wrote yesterday, next year I will definitely be in Florida for Christmas, preferably gone fishin’.

Windy Winter Weather

Over the holidays I spent time with my family in the Seattle area. The surrounding area is technically a temperate rain forest, meaning it doesn’t get too hot or too cold and they get lots of rainfall. The Seattle area also doesn’t get a lot of snow, so there was no white Christmas for us.

We did, however, have a windy Christmas. The wind gusts were so forceful that the power got knocked out. It was pretty chilly so we went to the movies for some warmth and light while the power was being restored to the neighborhood. Next year I think I’ll spend Christmas in Florida where I can take my boat out, filled with Evinrude 2 cycle oil XD100, and not worry about the cold.

Top Five Fishing Cities: The Twin Cities

Of course Minneapolis and St. Paul made the cut! They are located in the ‘Land of 10,000 Lakes’ aka Minnesota. I have frequented the Twin Cities because they have some of the best freshwater fishing in the nation.

The mighty Mississippi river flows through the cities and offers up a delectable offering of bass, walleyes, muskies, and catfish. You may want to check local regulations, but I’ve had no problems taking out my outboard motorboat filled with 2 cycle oil. Lakes litter the area, so ask locals for some tips. I personally favor White Bear Lake and North Arbor Lake in Hennepin County.

Top Five Fishing Cities: Miami

As an avid outdoorsman, it should come as a surprise to no one that I read Field & Stream – “The world’s leading outdoor website.” A few years back they ranked America’s top five best fishing cities. I’ve fished in a quite a few of the areas they recommend; here’s my take on their top five list.

Coming in at number five was Miami. I’ve fished their several times when visiting my brother and sister-in-law. You can easily catch snapper, mackerel, seatrout, and drum off the piers. Biscayne Bay offers plenty of tarpon while Tamianmi canal offers peacock bass. In Miami you can take your motorboat, topped off with Yamalube 2W oil, out for a relaxing day of fishing or simply cast a line from shore. In my opinion, the only drawback is the heat!

The River of No Return

“River of No Return” – has a nice ring to it, doesn’t it? In truth, the river is formally known as the Salmon River and it is located in Idaho. It got its ominous sounding nickname because the river’s current was so strong that boats could travel down river, but not back up.

The River of No Return also happens to be one of the best places for salmon fishing in the northwestern United States. Historically, 45 percent of steelhead, spring and summer Chinook salmon found in the originate in the Salmon River. I’ve fished there a few times myself with great success. While ordering your Yamalube 2 cycle oil online, you may also want to browse for information on fishing the River of No Return.

East Coast Trout Spots

As anyone who has ever caught a trout can tell you, it is an exhilarating feeling. For our East Coast readers, here are two spots that you should definitely check out. First, is Roscoe, NY, aka Trout Town USA. Beaverkill River and the Willowemoc River flow through town and provide stunning wild brown and rainbow trout.

State College, PA, home of Pennsylvania State University, is also a prime trout fishing location. Creeks and rivers fed by cool streams surround the area, making it a prime location for trout to live, breed, and be caught year round. Wherever your destination, make sure your boat engine has plenty of two cycle outboard oil.

Best Bass Fishing Spots in U.S.

Americans are blessed with plentiful bass fishing holes (with the exception of Alaska, but, hey, 49 out of 50 isn’t bad). I recently stumbled upon an article listing the top 25 bass fishing spots in the Union. From my own experience, I would say there are some more deserving areas that could be on the list, but overall, the author did a good job.

He listed Falcon Lake, TX, Lake Okeechobee, FL, and even Georgia’s Lake Lanier. California had quite a few spots on the list, including Lake Amidor, Castaic Lake, and The San Joaquin Delta. With a little bit of know-how, a good lure, and two cycle oil in your engine, whatever watering hole is closes to you can become the best bass catching spot.

Common Question Answered

I am often asked, ‘is 2 cycle oil interchangeable with 4 cycle oil?’ The answer is a resounding NO! Two cycle and 4 cycle oils have different formulas for use in two distinctly different ways.

If you were to put 4 cycle oil in a 2 cycle engine deposits will build up. Deposits can gunk up and severely curtail the life of a two cycle engine. Likewise, 2 cycle oil is too thin to provide effective lubrication to 4 cycle engines.

Two Stroke Motorcycles

Riding a two stroke motorcycle or puts a strain on the engine. Ideally, you should only need to change oil in once a season, but to be safe; I check the oil before every ride. When the oil needs to be replaced the process takes only a few moments of my time.

First I park the bike on a flat surface and place a drain pan under the engine block. Then I unscrew the drain plug and allow all the two cycle oil to drain out. I put the plug back in place, unscrew the top oil cap, and pour in new yamalube 2 cycle oil. Once the tank is full, I check the dipstick and screw the cap back in place.

Mixing Fuel for Mercury Outboard

Newer Mercury two stroke motors have oil injection systems that keep the ratio of gasoline and oil correct. Older two stroke motors from Mercury do not have those systems, thus, the oil and fuel need to be mixed by hand. This is a task that is not too difficult.

Start by gathering an empty, clean gasoline container and two cycle outboard oil. Next, look at how much gasoline you pumped into the container. For each gallon of gasoline in the container add three ounces of motor oil. Close the container and shake the contents vigorously before adding the gasoline and oil mixture into the fuel tank.
